The T.C. Chan Center is engaged in the creation (research), application (consulting) and dissemination (communication) of knowledge.
Research
The Chan Center engages in collaborative research that is related to the development of basic knowledge, technologies and processes. Practical applications range from the building to the urban scale. Outcomes include patent, publications and proprietary information.
Consultancy Services
The Chan Center provides consulting on a variety of global issues and concerns including:
- Policy-making: Policy and standard development; market research and surveying.
- New construction: Problem solving, testing and systems integration.
- Existing buildings: Advice on retrofit problems.
- Visualization services: Advances visualization solutions for complex structures and urban environments.
- Other services include CFD building analysis, light simulation, energy diagnosis and photovoltaic design and structural design.
Communication
The Chan Center provides educational opportunities to introduce students and professionals to state of the art concepts and models through seminars, workshops, symposia and publications. Publications include Building Simulation, an international research journal which publishes high quality, peer reviewed research and review articles that deal with the modeling or simulation of buildings.
This journal is published quarterly and is available online: http://www.springer.com/engineering/journal/12273. Seminars and workshops of special interest to architects and engineers are offered yearly. Topics include introductory and advanced knowledge of tools and techniques in the area of building technology, including building simulation and virtual visualization.
Partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme Sustainable Buildings Climate Initiative (UNEP-SBCI)
In 2011, the T.C. Chan Center became a Partner with the United Nations Environment Programme Sustainable Buildings Climate Initiative. The UNEP-SBCI works to promote sustainable building practices worldwide. This is a joint effort with key stakeholders in this sector such as industry, business, governments, local authorities, research institutions, academia, experts and NGOs. NEP-SBCI organizes symposia and workshops for awareness-raising and network-building.
The T.C. Chan Center will host the United Nations Environment Programme Sustainable Buildings Climate Initiative (UNEP-SBCI) Fall Symposium. The symposium will take place on October 27th and 28th, 2011 at the University of Pennsylvania. Past symposia have included panels, speakers and briefings on current events in sustainability.
